Maternity equipment purchasing in Kenya is driven by county and mission hospital procurement, and it is usually specified against a delivery target rather than a shopping list. This guide sets out what a functioning delivery room actually needs and what it costs in 2026.

What to look for in a delivery bed
The bed is doing four jobs at once: supporting a labouring woman comfortably for hours, converting to lithotomy quickly when the second stage arrives, giving the midwife access and light, and containing fluid. Beds that do the first three well and the fourth badly create an infection control problem every single delivery.
- Detachable leg sections and stirrups. They must lock positively. Stirrups that creep under load are unsafe and exhausting for the mother.
- Drainage. A properly sloped stainless drain pan with a bucket. Check the pan is removable for cleaning without tools.
- Upholstery. Seamless, chemical-resistant vinyl. Seams in a delivery bed mattress are where contamination collects.
- Height and back adjustment. Crank or hydraulic. Height matters for midwife back health across a career, not just for one delivery.
- Load rating and stability. Ask for the rating with the leg sections extended.
- Castors with brakes. All four locking, or the bed drifts during the second stage.
Building the room around the bed
A delivery bed alone does not make a maternity unit. The minimum functional set is the bed, a delivery set, a fetal doppler, a resuscitaire or at minimum a radiant warmer with a newborn resuscitation bag and mask, suction, an examination light, an infant weighing scale, a drug trolley and a sharps container. The most common gap we see on delivery is newborn resuscitation: the mother is well provided for and the baby is not.

Notes for county and mission hospital procurement
Two things save money on maternity tenders. First, specify consumables and instrument sets in the same procurement as the capital items, because a delivery bed waiting on a delivery set is a bed not delivering babies. Second, ask explicitly for installation, commissioning and staff training in the quotation. Equipment that arrives without commissioning routinely sits boxed for months, and that is the single most common reason a well-funded unit still refers cases.
